Portland Oregon, Easter 2005. Inside the FedEx box sent from Australia was a white fuffy bunny whose neck ribbon said
"Hoppy Easter." Apparently this is exactly what my husband's parents thought we needed for our first Easter celebration without family. The nearly 3 foot tall white fluffy bunny took up his own corner of our 700 square foot house. He'd only been perched on the table for a few minutes before our 1 year old Labrador Stella, aka "The Black Knight" took the Hoppy Easter Bunny by the ears and dragged him all around our muddy backyard.
I am reminded of this every holiday when we return home with these purchased holiday must have's that eventually retreat to the recycling, donation or thrashed in the backyard.
I want to have one holiday without any purchased junk. I want to create a holiday purely focused around the act of creation something for someone else. Maybe it's a photo album assembly, a painting or storybook. I am not sure the form it will take but I do know that the end result will be worth hanging on to.
